ABOUT about About Montana

Montana is a queer artist that works predominantly with illustration, oil portraiture and water colours. Born in Melbourne/Naarm, Montana’s practice has been self-taught, mostly by watching her siblings, parents and grandparents.

The artistic process for Montana is one motivated by catharsis; it’s a tool to work through challenging personal experiences and explore emotion. This often leads to a portrayal of common themes, including mental health, vulnerability, courage, queerness and inner turmoil.

The use of everyday relatable objects, combined with soft pastel colours, offers a sense of familiarity and comfort while exploring taboo topics. Montana ultimately aims to create a platform for audience exploration, discussion and meditation on intimate and often vulnerable themes.

Montana currently resides in Darwin/Garamilla, where her practice has become more experimental and increasingly influenced by nature – both in theme and medium.
